Your driving license with your foreign driving license (not EU driving licenses) expires 6 months after the first registration in Germany. So that you can continue to drive in Germany afterwards, you must have your foreign driver's license converted into a German driver's license.

Differences in your possible driving license classes

If you have to take a practical test, you have the choice between the following 3 driving license classes.

class B

• After passing the exam, you can drive cars with manual and automatic transmissions

• Driving lessons take place in a car with manual transmission

• The test takes place on a car with a manual transmission

• Minimum number of driving lessons not required

Class B with key number 78 (B78)

• After passing the exam, you can only drive cars with automatic transmissions

• Driving lessons take place on a car with automatic transmission

• Test takes place on a car with automatic transmission

• Minimum number of driving lessons not required

Class B with key number 197 (B197)

• After passing the exam, you can drive cars with manual and automatic transmissions

• 10 driving hours mandatory on a car with manual transmission

• Mandatory test drive of 30 minutes on a car with a manual transmission

• Minimum number of driving hours on a car with automatic transmission not mandatory

• Test takes place on a car with automatic transmission

Whether you have a probationary period in Germany depends on how long you have held your foreign driving license:

• Foreign driving license longer than 2 years -> no probationary period in Germany

• Foreign driver's license shorter than 2 years -> probationary period in Germany is as long as you have your driver's license (foreign + German driver's license) for a total of 2 years.

Requirements for the recognition of your foreign driving license:

​

• Your foreign driving license must be valid.

• At the time your foreign driving license was issued, you had been resident in the issuing country for more than 6 months.

• At the time your foreign driving license was issued, you did not have your normal place of residence in Germany.

• At the time your foreign driving license was renewed, you did not have your normal place of residence in Germany. The date of issue on the driver's license is usually decisive.

• Only the Road Traffic Office, Department for Driving Licenses, decides whether it is possible to transfer your foreign driving license.

After passing the test, you can drive cars with automatic and manual transmissions.

Theoretical lessons are not mandatory.

However, you are still welcome to participate for free.

The driving lessons consist of practice lessons and special trips.

Your driving instructor ensures a stress-free learning atmosphere so that you enjoy the training and don't need too many hours.

It goes without saying that your driving instructor is on time and keeps to the driving times.

Always according to our motto: "As much as necessary, as little as possible!"

Our driving instructors will train you according to our training plan.

An exam simulation at the end of your training will help you and your driving instructor to assess whether you will pass the exam successfully.

Driving lessons are also offered in English.

In the practice hours you practice the 5 basic driving tasks and driving in the city.

The number is variable. A minimum number is not specified.

So that your driving instructor can show you all the traffic rules relevant to the test, we recommend the following number of driving appointments:

• approx. 4 appointments of 90 minutes each if you already have a lot of driving experience

• approx. 10 appointments of 90 minutes each if you don't have that much driving experience

special trip

In the special trips you practice driving on the motorway, country roads and at night.

No special trips are required by law.

However, the test can also be driven on the motorway. Therefore, we recommend driving about 45 minutes on the motorway. Your driving instructor can make sure that you would pass the test there.
